friday, July 31: Jody Redhage Ferber & Alan Ferber
Cellist Jody Redhage Ferber and Trombonist Alan Ferber began performing as a duo in 2017, first at the Salzburg Jazz Festival in Austria, with subsequent performances in Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall, the World Chess Hall of Fame, the Brooklyn Public LIbrary, and upcoming at the 2026 Lake George Jazz Festival. Cellist and composer Jody Redhage Ferber "has been at the forefront of creative music for two decades, effectively straddling classical and jazz settings" (All About Jazz), and has performed in venues on 5 continents and with artists such as Neil Diamond, Jay-Z, Beyonce, Sufjan Stevens, esperanza spalding and Fred Hersch. Trombonist and composer Alan Ferber has been called "one of the jazz world's premiere composers and arrangers for large groups," and has been nominated for three Grammys as a composer and bandleader, and was named the top trombonist in DownBeat's rising star category in 2022. On July 31 at Tower Grove Park, the Redhage-Ferber Duo preview music from their upcoming project Building Elements, inspired by their youngest son and a universal natural impulse in childhood to playfully build with any and all materials made available. The Duo creatively craft compositions and arrangements inspired by the enchantment of childhood building and the developing impulse to pursue increasingly complex building projects, stylistically pulling from their experience straddling the genres of classical chamber music, jazz improvisation, pop, indie rock, and blues.
