The History and Heritage of this Year’s Featured Mansion

This year’s Martinis at the Mansion: A Speakeasy Soirée will take place at the beautiful Compton Heights home of Larry and Sandy Koesterer—a residence with more than a century of history.

Designed by renowned St. Louis architect Ernst Preisler, the home was one of only six homes built in Compton Heights between 1902 and 1904, as much of the city’s building industry turned its attention to the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair.

The home’s original owners, Anthony J. and Mary (Mollie) Nulsen, were part of a prominent Compton Heights family. Anthony Nulsen was also a “liquor merchant”—a fascinating detail that may help explain the European beer steins displayed in the dining room.

One of the home’s most remarkable features is its original stained-glass window overlooking the entry hall. Even more intriguing? A nearly identical painting was discovered by the Koesters at an auction in Tennessee after they purchased the home in 2003. It is believed the painting may have served as a model for the window.
